NATURAL BUILDING MATERIALS
Classic Strocks are made from the overburden of our own brick clay, creating a warm orange block containing 2% chopped straw and 2% hydrated lime to help control the colour.
Site Strocks are made differently. Suitable spoil excavated from a construction site is transported to HG Matthews, tested and then processed into Strocks. This helps reduce the amount of material sent to landfill, along with the associated disposal costs and taxes.
At the end of a building’s life, much of the material can potentially be reused in future construction or returned safely to the ground, supporting a more circular approach to building.
Not all soils are suitable for producing Site Strocks, so an initial sample must be tested before production can begin. Once suitability has been confirmed, blocks can be produced and tested to meet the requirements of the individual project. Some projects require minimal additional testing, while more complex schemes may involve further discussions with architects and engineers to establish the necessary performance criteria.
Strocks have been successfully fire tested, and in many applications further fire testing may not be required. However, this will depend on the material being used, the project specification and the scale of the contract.
Site Strocks provide a practical way of capturing and reusing excavated soil, transforming what would otherwise be waste into a useful building material.
